About the Artist
Award-winning artist, Therese LaChance Ely lives and paints in Fremont, California. She is known for her “Sierra-scapes”, inspired by backpacking and canoeing adventures in the Sierra Nevada Mountains and other off-road destinations. Her paintings frequently begin with a mini sketchbook, brush, and camera tucked into a pack pouch. Small paintings done on location often serve as studies for larger studio pieces. Her favorite medium is oil paint, although she occasionally works in transparent and opaque watercolor. “My goal is to capture both the tranquility and exuberance that is the beauty of nature”.
Therese began painting in childhood, taking both private art classes and California State enrichment classes. Her university work earned a degree in biology and chemistry with the occasional art class along the way. After leaving a career in analytical chemistry to raise three children, she resumed her artwork Through Paint Yosemite workshops, Therese found both the challenge and pleasure of plein-air painting, studying with inspiring master artists. The encouragement of her husband, Gary and his enthusiastic backpacking companionship, have been invaluable in Therese's growth as an artist.
Therese proudly shows her work at the Fremont Art Association Gallery, and Jan's Art Studio. She has twice been named "Artist of the Year" by the Fremont Art Association, and has served in several association offices, including two years as the body's president. Therese teaches small groups of young adult artists at the studio where she paints, and volunteers as a Boy Scout art merit badge counselor.
